There are different accessories that you can use with your sink. One of them is the sink grid. Here on Ruvati, we also refer to it as the bottom rinse grid. It is included with many of our premium sinks by default. In this post, we’ll discuss what a sink grid is and the purpose it serves. We’ll also tell you the various benefits of getting one.
What Exactly is a Sink Grid?
A sink grid is a grid with a mesh construction that is made to sit at the bottom of the sink. It has many benefits and is considered a must-have by many homeowners.
What is the Purpose of a Sink Grid?
The primary purpose of a sink grid is to prevent direct contact with the sink’s bowl. In other words, when the grid is placed inside, the dishes, pots, pans, etc., don’t touch the sink’s bottom.
Some sink grids are made to touch the bowl from the underside and prevent anything on top from doing so. Others are made to sit elevated from the bowl, which happens due to the thick, padded corners.
What are the Benefits of a Sink Grid?
Here are the benefits that you can enjoy with a sink grid.
- Reduced damage to the sink: Due to the raised layer above the sink’s bowl surface, things like knives, spoons, plates, pans, etc., don’t come in direct contact. Due to that, there are no scratches or dents in the bowl.
- Reduced noise: Placing pots and pans even carefully in a sink can result in a loud bang and clang…which isn’t always pleasant to hear. If you have a grid, especially if it is made of silicone, you get an automatic sound dampener. Everything that lands on the grid just gives you a muffled frump. (Even if the grid is made with stainless steel, there is less noise on contact due to it being separated from the sink bowl.)
- Better water drainage: With the dishes in the sink raised above the bowl surface, there is no obstruction to the water flow. This allows better drainage and prevents buildup.
- Reduced damage to the dishes/utensils: Apart from reducing damage to the sink, the grids can also protect the dishes/utensils that you place inside. Hard sink materials, like granite, can chip glass and plates if they are placed roughly. A sink grid prevents this.
- Cleaner and more hygienic: When washing dishes, the used water tends to accumulate at the bottom of the sink, where the remaining dishes are resting. This can be prevented with the use of a grid.
How to Clean Sink Grids?
It’s important for a sink grid to be regularly washed. Ideally, you should wash it every day, the first time you enter your kitchen. This prevents the buildup of germs and bacteria.
Here is how you can perform the cleaning:
- For a stainless-steel sink, you can simply use normal dish soap along with a sponge or a soft brush. Scrub carefully so that there is no abrasion or loss of lustre.
- For a silicon grid, you can do the same thing. You could also wash it in your dishwasher. Since silicon grids are softer and more flexible, they are dishwasher-friendly.
How to Get the Most Out of a Sink Grid?
Here are some tips to keep in mind to get the most out of your sink grid.
Be sure to buy the right one
Buy the right grid for your sink to get the most out of it. There are different aspects that you have to keep in mind, including:
- Material: Usually, sink grids are available in stainless steel or silicone. The two materials are different in terms of maintenance and even in the benefits that they provide. For example, a silicone grid is easier to clean, but it sits flush against the sink surface, which makes it less hygienic than stainless steel ones. The prices of these two materials can also vary significantly. If you are able to clean the grid regularly, silicone can be a good choice as it offers decent soundproofing. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more expensive grid with an aesthetic appearance, stainless steel can be better.
- Size: Make sure to get a grid that fits your sink. Be especially careful about not getting one that is too big. A grid smaller than your sink can still be used, but not if it is bigger.
- Protection: If you’re buying a stainless-steel grid, get one that has rubber feet or padding. This will help ensure that the grid itself doesn’t damage the sink (which is what it is supposed to prevent the pots and pans from doing).
Regularly clean it
We’ve mentioned how you can clean your grid above. Doing it regularly is important so that the grid retains its aesthetic look and doesn’t become a hygiene concern.
As for the frequency of the cleaning sessions, you should do it ideally at the start of each day.
Try using it away from the sink
While the primary use of the grid is in the sink, it can serve a number of purposes even outside of it. For example,
- If you have a stainless-steel grid, you can use it as a makeshift drying rack by placing it next to the sink instead of inside it. You can rest your dishes on the rack and drain them, channeling all the water into the sink.
- You can also use the grid to rest your hot pots and pans (if it is made of stainless steel). Countertop materials like laminate and Quartz can get damaged by hot pots and pans. You can use your grid as a stand to avoid getting burn marks on the countertop.
- On top of being a drying rack for dishes, the grid can also be a drying rack for food items. Certain foods, especially vegetables like okra, need to be dried out before cooking. Once you wash the veggies, you can lay a towel on the countertop with the grid on top, and leave them to dry.
By using your grid for all of these purposes, you will be able to truly get the most out of it.
Don’t put too much weight on the grid
This is an important maintenance tip that can help make your grid last.
Whether you’re using the grid in the sink or in any of the other ways that we’ve mentioned above, make sure not to put a lot of weight on it. This can damage it, initially by warping, and then by cleanly snapping it in half (if it is made of stainless steel).
